Esta Página web está dedicada a enseñarte a hablar Fon o Fongbe, la lengua predominante del Sur de Benin , (pronunciación en inglés) Le Benin (pronunciación en francés), y Oeste de África, que es hablado por cerca de un millón y medio de personas. Me siento afortunado de haber tenido esta oportunidad única de vivir en Benin durante más de dos años, y quiero usar esta web para compartir mis experiencias con todo el mundo que pueda para ayudarles a ver el lugar tan impresionante que es Benin.

Si estas planeando ir de vacaciones a Benin, o planeando ir a vivir a Benin, (Cuerpos de Paz, Trabajos gubernamentales, trabajo misionero, ONG's, Agencias de Ayuda Internacional, etc.) o quieres aprender más de Benin, entonces este es tu sitio!!

Ser capaz de hablar unas pocas palabras en Fon, aunque solo sean unas pocas palabras, hará que tengas inmediatamente el cariño de los Benineses. Ellos suelen decir emocionados: Ahh! Yovo Se Fongbe!

"Dios mío, el Yovo habla Fongbe!" pues es muy raro que un extranjero se tome el tiempo de aprender su lengua. El Fon se comprende en la mayor parte del Sur de Benin (Desde la zona de Savalou / Savé y hacia el sur) así que no te equivocarás aprendiendo al menos algunas palabras en Fon. Además te ayudará a ganarte su respeto cuando estés negociando y así conseguir mejores precios. Fon es una lengua verdaderamente fácil y divertida, y sirve como ventana hacia una fascinante cultura (ver mis descripciones de cada expresión). Soy un RPCV (Voluntario Cuerpo de Paz Regresado) que vivió en Allada

durante dos años (de '95-'97) y así aprendí Fon. Grabé muchas expresiones y palabras útiles en Fon. Pincha en los enlaces de Fon para descargar un pequeño archivo .wav, y tu reproductor las reproducirá automáticamente. Pincha aquí para ayuda técnica para escuchar los archivos .wav Reproduce cada palabra o frase varias veces y practica repitiéndolas después. Tiene que hablarlo si quieres aprenderlo, y sobre todo Have fon! (diviértete!)

Above: This is me (guess which one I am?) at my neighbor's funeral ceremony. The ceremony was for the matron of the extended family of about 40 people. It was for the one year anniversary of her death and was a big affair as you can see. It is custom for family members and close friends to wear the same fabric to show solidarity.

Mi Kwabo -Welcome (literally) but really means "Hello." Where ever you may be, no matter how short a time you've been there, (i.e. even if you're riding a bike), you can welcome another person to the space you're occupying. "The Prefix "Mi" can be added to many greetings to make them formal or plural (when speaking to more than one person).
