Your
site is absolutely amazing! I spend all night reading it. A
very good friend of mine is from Benin. I met him when I was
studying in Germany, as we were both foreign exchange
students. I am living in Canada now and he is back in Benin. A
female Canadian friend of mine went to Benin last year for
humanitarian work (Terre des Hommes), and I gave her my
Beninese friend's name and address. The 2 hooked up, fell in
love, and are now married.
I am planning to visit them in Cotonou some time this year...
if I can ever afford it. Life in North America is all
money-based, and I am working hard to try to pay off my
student loan and afford a trip to Africa.
Do you have any tips for what airline offers the best trip
Toronto-Cotonou?
Thank you so much for your amazing web site!

afongandjia,
We looked at your site and we found it really great! We know a
little bit of Fongbe for having lived in Benin between 1996
and 1998, but not so much, congatulations, we are very
impressed.
Please continue making people aware of the beauty of Benin.

Great
site! I brings back memories... I have lived in Cotonou for 6
months while doing a survey on street foods. In Cotonou they
don't have a lot of strange meat things like bush rat. I
wished I read all these things before I went there, I think it
could have helped
I was working with a translator because most of the people
spoke Fon, Yoruba or Mina and I couldn't understand. Talking
English was very strange for me for a while, because I thought
in French. Of course I travelled around to see Ganvie,
Pendjari and the museums. I had a great time there and even
the hygiene was bad and the appartment not so big, it was a
great time. I will go back sometime, but I don't know when. I
think it will be strange, because they will see me again as a
Yovo... and not one of them anymore. |

ENJOYED YOUR SITE. I WONDER IF YOU COULD GET ME SOME

MAKE CONTACT WITH THE DIRECTOR BUT THE E-MAIL ADDRESS I HAVE
IS INCORRECT.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE IF YOU CAN OFFER SOME ASSISTANCE. |

A fon gangi a? It was nice to see a site on Benin. It brought
back many good memories of Benin. I was a Peace Corps
Volunteer near Misserete in 1985-88.

Dear
Chris,
I really enjoyed your essays. I am off to Benin for a short
stay in June (rainy season I know) and feel that your essays,
along with the other things I have been reading, will make
life easier and more enjoyable when I get there. I was
particuarly impressed with your description of the small and
hidden things that make for cultural misunderstandings..
All best,
AC

Your
stories are great! They reminded me so much of my own trip to
Bénin during the summer of 2000. I was doing a forestry
internship there so I got to visit many parts of the country.
I especially liked the week we spent at
the Parc National de la Pendjari.
Everything you said in your stories really hit home... the
tiny chickens (poulet bicyclette), being singled out and
scaring kids because of our color and the boisterous market! I
dream of going back to Bénin to live there, as soon as
I take care of these student loans of mine! You can't pay
those off on $6 a day!
I'm so glad I found this site. I myself am typing up my daily
journal entries and sending them out weekly to about twenty
friends who couldn't get enough of my oral stories! I'm up
to episode 31 now! It's so much fun to relive these moments
through writings! It's as if I'm still there, unknowingly
biting down on a chicken head and a sheep's tescticle, taking
my first zim ride, seeing a hilarious Chinese movie for 8
cents, eating a super juicy fresh pineapple, getting daily
marriage proposals, etc. It's all good!

Hey!
"American white guy speak my language!" Chris, the
site is unbelievable. I thought of you recently while
listening to Oremi, and I was blown away when I found it. I
hope you are doing well -- it sure seems like you are!

Your site is very interesting and so complete! I've never
seen so much emphasis on the language of Fon, just what I've been
looking for for a long time now. Anyone who has enjoyed this site,
come and visit www.oremiforever.com
sometime. |

A fon dagbe a. Marvellous. I know some Beninese people but
it is quite difficult for them to find time to learn fon to me. I know
only some words that I have found in a very nice book about Benin and
also some words that a friend of mine learnt to me. |
