Do you have any comments?   Yes! I am in love with a Beninese man names Enagnon Claude Toze from Porto Novo. We talk to his family on the phone and we can best understand each other in broken French. Instead of working on French, I've wanted to perfect my Fon since this is the language of all the good secrets! I am very grateful to you and hope this will make frienship and romance even more spicy and rewarding for me, Enagnon & all the Tozes!!

Do you have any comments?   Chris:

I stumbled across your Fon Is Fun site in an effort to learn more about this wonderful, new (to me) singer named Angelique Kidjo. Her song No Worry, from the Oremi album has been getting a lot of “airplay” recently on www.smoothjazz.com.

A couple of years ago, my employer loaned me a CD which had a compilation of songs by various African musicians. Though I understood none of the languages, I enjoyed all of the music and Kidjo’s Batonga quickly grew to be one of my favorite songs. I didn’t bother to look for any of her recordings locally, because I assumed (maybe too quickly) that they wouldn’t have been deemed “commercially viable” by the major distributors. When I heard No Worry coming from my PC’s speakers I immediately recognized her voice and thought to myself, “Mawu! Enyo Din!” (Courtesy of Fon Is Fun, of course.)

I started searching the internet, learned Kidjo is from Benin, and then began searching for translations of her lyrics into English. I found your site fairly quickly and have been trying to soak up the language for the last two hours. The maddening part is that, unlike the Beninese, I have a deadline tomorrow morning and now I have to work even later tonight. Why did you have to make your website so darned intriguing?!

Anyway, just wanted to let you know I appreciate your obviously intensive effort in putting the website together, and helping others who otherwise couldn’t to explore our world. A parting question: do you know if anyone has translated Kidjo’s lyrics?

Edabo,

Do you have any comments?

Do you have any comments?   Hi!
I love the work you've done... This is one of the bettre sites on Bénin I've visited. Next year (probably March) me and my Beninese boyfriend are going to visit his Mother in Ouidah. He hasn't seen her for thirty years, he left his country when he was six and never returned. I'm thrilled I can learn a few words 'Fon' before going to visit. It will be a great adventure and all tips anyone would like to give are more than welcome!

Merry Christmas and a Happy Newyear!

Merci d'avance! Bonne continuation! Odabo!

Please can we work together in order to correct some of the orthograph. For example you may write Awanou ka ka instead of Ahouanou ka ka.

Congratulations for this site, so useful for the non-beninese musicians who sing in Fongbe !Thanks a lot !

P.S : a little information about " Counting money in fongbe ": the word " kpon " or "kpoun", used for 25 francs, comes from the english "pound".

Do you have any comments?   hello Christopher,
my name is Raymonde Hounnou, I live in France but my
parents come from Benin (Bopa and Grand Popo). I'm 28
year old and never talked a word of fongbe in my whole
life (except "a fon gangi a?","yovo, yovo, bonsoir" and a few others). My mother is half Cap Verdian and we usually
speak the language her mother taught her. I've discovered a week ago your web site ("par hasard") and I wanted to thank you personnally for this wonderful work.
Congratulations and thanks a lot.
PS:you can't imagine my father's surprise as I asked him at phone "Toche e do xwegbe a?"

Do you have any comments?   I LOVED your photos! I am an elementary school librarian. My niece just arrived in Benin for her Peace Corps stint. I recently sent her a letter and a "Flat Stanley" (a third grade project in which a young book character gets squished by a bulletin board and becomes flat...(odd premise for a children's book). The good news, Flat Stanley gets to travel to all sorts of places. Our students mail Stanley with a letter. Recipients hopefully send information, pictures, artifacts etc. of where they are. I told my niece she did not have to send photos because I wasn't sure if she had access to developing. (I also enclosed some money for postage since I know you PCV's are cash poor). I knew I could find photos on the internet. Sure enough...I found yours! The photos are wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to post them and share them.
I'm sure your life has changed with your experiences!
Sincerely,
kathy m

Do you have any comments?   loved the pages and photos...my younger brother Charlie just went to Benin in July to begin his stint in the Peace Corps teaching English and AIDs awareness..he has been writing us an e-mail journal so it was nice to see some photos, especially taken from a former Corps volunteer, to complement his writings...I have a much better idea now of what he is experiencing...we miss him but I think he will come out of that experience a much better man...what a world we live in, huh?
